How many pieces in your closet do you absolutely, unequivocally love? Everyone has their favorite shirt they always wear out of the dryer or the pair of “good” jeans. What if you had a closet full of these pieces?
That’s what capsule wardrobes are all about. When you curate a capsule wardrobe, you’re crafting a closet full of pieces you love. Everyone’s capsule wardrobe can be different.
Wondering how to create a capsule wardrobe of your own? Check out our tips below.
1) think about your lifestyle
Let your lifestyle guide your capsule wardrobe. Do you work in a formal office environment or can you work from home? Do you have fancy social soirees every weekend or do you prefer more casual hangouts?
This will inform your choices. You might need one blazer and pencil skirt while someone else requires a few business casual options.
In the end, you should have an idea of a signature look and how you can get rid of excess clothing.
2) make a list of your must-haves
Once you’ve done step #1, you should have a foundation for what kinds of pieces need to be in your capsule wardrobe.
This varies for everyone, but some common staples include a classic button-down shirt, a jean jacket, nice slacks, leggings, a neutral dress, and a skirt. These items become your base wardrobe.
Ideally, all items in your base wardrobe coordinate with each other. You can then add pops of color and texture in other items like scarves, jewelry, and shoes.
3) go for versatility
Versatility is a key element of any capsule wardrobe. After all, a capsule wardrobe is meant to eliminate clutter. The easiest way to do this is to incorporate pieces that can be dressed up or down.
4) trim your closet
Go through your closet and set aside items you know you want in your capsule wardrobe. Use these items as building blocks and take note of what you want but don’t currently have.
Once you’ve chosen the clothes you want in your capsule wardrobe, put the others aside. You can put these clothes in a separate section of your closet, in a suitcase, or try that backwards hanger trick—whatever works for you!
If it’s been a few months and you haven’t reached for some of those clothes, consider donating them. Of course, sometimes you’re attached to some funky patterned pants or a cozy sweater—even if it doesn’t fit in the capsule wardrobe. That’s okay! There are probably other clothes that didn’t make it in the capsule wardrobe that you can donate to charity.
5) make it yours
Despite what you might see online, there are no strict rules to capsule wardrobes. It’s your closet! Make it work for you. Don’t feel pressured to restrict yourself to 20 pieces or make your wardrobe last all year long.
It’ll be a work in progress. Strike a balance between creating a curated collection and having fun with your outfits.
ready to go for it?
Capsule wardrobes can make it so much easier to get dressed in the morning and pack for trips. Good luck!
