Carving a Halloween pumpkin is fun and all, but why not switch it up this year but putting a glam twist on the tradition? All you need are a few items and you’ll have a stunning centerpiece that’ll wow through Turkey Day!
1 pumpkin, any size
1 can of spray paint (we used metallic gold, but any color will do)
Round stickers or masking tape
With a slightly damp cloth, gently wipe the pumpkin clean. This will help prevent any specks of dirt interfering with the paint application. Pick a well-ventilated area, or head outside if the weather’s right. Spread out a tarp for your work surface. A plastic garbage bag, split wide open, works well as an alternative. Slip on plastic gloves before you start (we learned the hard way!).
For a polka-dotted design, apply round stickers all over the pumpkin. We concentrated most of them up top, then gradually spaced them out toward the bottom, for a cascading effect. There is no right or wrong way, though—go wild! If you’re going for a striped look, apply skinny strips of masking tape down the pumpkin, evenly spaced around. Pinch and fold tape at the stem. Double check that the tape or stickers are firmly adhered to the surface with no air bubbles, as this will prevent paint from sneaking in underneath.
Now for the fun part! Walking slowly around the pumpkin, about a foot away, spray the paint evenly onto the surface, avoiding the stem. To paint the bottom, tilt the pumpkin by the stem. Finish by spraying the stem. Let paint dry for 30 minutes or an hour. Ready for the big reveal? Gently peel off stickers or tape and voilà! A chic centerpiece that’s got fall flair all over it. If there are any unpainted spots near the stem, spray a little puddle of paint on the tarp and use a small paintbrush for touchups. Have fun and happy decorating!
