Ok, other than on the big screen, how often does boy meet girl and it’s instant love? Not very often, right? Well, this fall, it happened in the most stylish circles with the much-loved “borrowed from the boys” trend. Just thinking of all the sumptuous plaid, tailored trousers and menswear-inspired oxfords makes me want to rush out and redo my whole closet. Some may think it’s too bookish or serious of a trend, but here are a few ways you can soften the sharpness and make it your own.
Everyone loves a moto jacket. Why? Because wearing one makes you feel like a real rebel, even if you’re just headed out for lunch. The faux leather moto above from Valerie Stevens and below from Bernardo are both super supple. Style with a windowpane plaid top or plaid Democracy jeggings and you’re ready to roll.
A Softer Side
We may be borrowing from the boys, but that doesn’t mean the styles are overly masculine. Much to the contrary! This houndstooth plaid poncho winks at the trend in a soft, subtle way. For a little edgy kick, slip into these London Rag studded booties.
Footwear That’s Femmes Wear
Even footwear is getting in on the trend by updating traditional men’s shoe styles in a feminine way. Clockwise from top left: perforated platforms from Seven Dials; charming sneaks from Circus by Sam Edelman; faux pearl loafers from Kensie; and satin slip-ons from MIA.
Finish with Flair
Prefer a low-key approach to the borrowed from the boys trend? All you need is a briefcase-inspired tote from Anne Klein that shows you mean business.
