it’s poppin’, it’s poppin’
Who remembers the 2008 song “Lip Gloss” by Lil Mama?
I jammed to this classic back in the day. Wait, I still do. Today we’re talking about lips. Specifically, lips so luscious. In case you haven’t heard, MATTE IS IN, and, this May, we’re trying out the trend.
We partnered with NYX to offer their Matte Lipsticks both online and in stores. And if you need any help with this beauty trend, don’t worry. If you need some tips on how to wear matte lipstick, we got you. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Lip liner
- Lipstick (duh!)
how to wear matte lipstick
I stopped by my local Palais Royal to pick out lip colors. The Bolder the Better. With the help of a friendly cosmetic associate, I selected these three colors.
- Zen Orchid (Bright Purple)
- Crave (Bold Pink)
- Dark Era (Brownish Red???)
Truthfully, I don’t picture myself as a “bright lipstick girl.” I normally sport the natural look and would define my makeup skills as severely amateur.
If I’m feeling expressive, I’ll look up a YouTube makeup tutorial for cat eyes and then spend the next 30 minutes battling with my eyeliner. (BTW – I’ve never successfully mastered the cat eye.)
Lips, however, are easier to ace.
First Step: NYX Lip Primer. I based my lips with primer before poppin’ on the lipstick. If you want your luscious lips to last longer, you need to prime them!
I smoothed Zen Orchid over my lip primer and… something strange happened. I felt JOY! These bright purple lips made me want to danceeeee. I grabbed my G by Guess sunglasses and embraced the look. My purple lips surprised me.
Next up: Crave! I removed the purple and replaced it with a bold pink. MORE JOY. More dancing. More selfies in sunglasses. Bright colors = Bright mood.
Lastly: Dark Era. I’m not sure how to define this color, but it’s definitely not bright. No dancing in this lip color. Dark Era is the most natural looking of the three, but it felt more out of the ordinary than the bright purple. Dark Era and I didn’t get along.

My biggest takeaway: Lip Liner. I opted out of lip liner when I made my purchase. Mistake.
My first lipstick line mirrored a toddler painting (emphasis on my severely amateur makeup skills). No shame in saying that I used a Q-tip to even out my lip lines.
whatchu know ’bout me? whatchu, whatchu know?
Conclusion: Now you know how to wear matte lipstick! Matte may not be my everyday look, but… WATCH OUT WEEKEND. Your girl will be out on the town sporting these purple lips.
