Real Life Real Style is about celebrating everyday women who are anything but ordinary. They’re the women who balance work and family and are the glue that holds it all together—while looking altogether fabulous. Just like Darci, the true Real Life Real Style inspiration.
Darci and her husband have what they call a Brady Bunch family. With six kids between them, there’s rarely a dull moment in their home. But Darci wouldn’t have it any other way. Raised in the Midwest, she’s no stranger to hard work. After getting all of the kids out the door and headed to school, she heads to downtown Houston where she works as a senior graphic designer for a prominent energy company. Even on days when she doesn’t have to pick up the kids or take them to sports practice, Darci doesn’t slow down. She’ll cook dinner for her family of 8, take a run or walk with her husband, help the kids with homework and get everything ready to do it all again the next day.
“I balance my life by being the most multitasking person I can possibly be,” she says. “I don’t have family around, so I just make it work. And I’m flexible. Always be flexible.”
Darci and her husband always make time for travel. No matter where she goes, Darci always finds inspiration for her first love—art. The walls of her home are decorated with blown-up photographs she’s taken on her travels, along with canvases she’s painted.
Her friend Angela who nominated her for Real Life Real Style says Darci’s sense of style radiates from head to toe and hits you the moment you walk into her home.
“Where I see one color, she sees a blend of five,” Angela says of Darci. “No detail is overlooked. She values hard work and has a firecracker spirit inherited from her lightweight boxer father. Amazingly, she doesn’t even know how special she is.”
When Angela told Darci she had nominated her, Darci was surprised and flattered, especially when she learned which pictures Angela submitted for the nomination. “They just showed me as a strong woman,” Darci says, “and I know she appreciates that about me, and I appreciate that about her.”
With six kids and a full-time job, Darci never slows down. We gave her options that give her the freedom of comfort and while reflecting her confidence and character.
If Darci had to label her style, she’d call it “streamlined bohemian.” Although she loves the bohemian look, it’s not necessarily practical for a corporate office, so she pairs more easygoing pieces with a tailored blazer and office appropriate accessories. But no matter what’s she’s wearing, Darci always shines through. “My style is comfortable,” she says. “I’m relaxed, I’m chill, I’m a little artsy, I’m a little fun, I’m me. I’m not trying to be too put together, in a way.”
She gets her style inspiration from celebrities, friends, her teenage daughters, co-workers, magazines, Instagram and Pinterest. “I do love the bohemian look, that kind of relaxed lifestyle. Maybe it’s because I want more of that in my life,” she says with a laugh.
Darci loves the relaxed bohemian style, but she realizes it’s not always practical for the office. Her go-to work outfit is a relaxed dress paired with a more tailored jacket and booties.
A dress and boots are her go-to items. Dresses allow her to dress up for work without sacrificing comfort. A great pair of boots, she says, always adds lots of character and completes the look. And she likens style to artistic expression.
“Style is important because it’s a reflection of yourself. It’s a way to be creative, to express how you feel or how you want to feel. It gives you freedom and confidence and character,” Darci explains. “It’s like you are choosing the colors of your own painting each and every day. You choose how much detail goes into that painting, how much light, how much contrast, how much saturation, how much sparkle. Style doesn’t have to be fancy, either. It’s not about how much money you spent. It’s about how much thought you put behind it.”
Darci equates fashion with artistic expression. Since she describes herself as artsy and fun, our stylists put together an outfit that expresses her creativity by mixing colors and styles.
