Getting anxious with Christmas only six days away? Read our tips on how to host a holiday party this season. Trust us. It’ll make hosting your friends and family a little less stressful, and a whole lot merrier.
1) celebrate christmas around the world
Just because you’re celebrating Christmas in America but that doesn’t mean it has to be all-American. Switch things up by embracing the interesting ways in which other countries celebrate the holidays.
In France, it’s tradition to eat 13 desserts! You can pick one country or culture to celebrate or combine several. Sort of like an Epcot holiday dinner.
2) deck those halls
Decorating for the holidays should be fun, not stressful. Check out our collection of Christmas décor and get everything you need in one spot!
Get the family together for some handmade Christmas fun. Collect pinecones from outdoors. Spray paint them white to give the illusion of snow or leave them au natural. Put them into a bowl for a festive centerpiece.
Shiny ornaments make great decorative pieces that you can hang all over the house, not just from the tree. Loop them over a long piece of ribbon for an easy garland.
Then set the mood by putting a couple of cinnamon sticks in boiling water on the stove. When guests arrive, they’ll be greeted by a comforting, Christmasy aroma.
3) set the bar high
When you’re the host you don’t always have a lot of time for socializing when you’re also restocking snacks, cleaning up after the kids, and cooking.
To keep the party going and your guests engaged, set up a “make your own” bar. It’s easy to tailor to different audiences.
Adults will appreciate create-your-own-cocktails and coffee. Younger guests will go wild for a hot chocolate bar with marshmallows, whipped cream, and other goodies.
It’s a fun and delicious way to keep everyone occupied.
4) not your usual gift exchange
Put a twist on the usual Secret Santa.
Instead of just passing out presents, turn the usual old gift exchange into a game. Ask everyone to bring a wrapped present that anyone at the gathering would enjoy (or get a laugh from).
Have everyone form a circle. Have someone select a gift. Whoever gave that gift gets to pick next. They can either choose a different gift or steal from someone else. A gift can only be stolen up to two times.
5) ugliest christmas sweater contest
Request that all of your guests arrive in their ugliest Christmas sweater. Encourage them to decorate their sweaters and go all out.
If you need help with your ugly sweater, check out our post all about winning an ugly Christmas sweater contest!
Create ballots with different categories like Ugliest Sweater, Silliest Sweater, Cutest Sweater, etc. Have all your guests vote and have silly prizes ready for each winner.
