They do real life with real style. Meet Monica, a military wife and mother of three who greets everything life brings her with a smile on her face. We know you’ll be as inspired by her story as we are! Read on to learn about this Real Life, Real Style role model.
A military wife, mother of three and youngest of six children, Monica has learned how to take everything in life with a grain of salt and with a smile on her face. She was nominated by her daughter Emma who says of Monica, “She managed to take care of a household of rambunctious children and a goofy husband, and managed to laugh and smile the entire time.”
Monica’s sense of humor is evident in her explanation of why her parents waited eight years to have her: “My family conspires and calls me the accident, but I know, deep down inside, that my parents practiced with five trial runs, ran the numbers, did the research analysis and then gave birth to me.”
Monica understands the value of hard work and gives her all, whether she’s at her full-time job working for a CPA, volunteering at church, serving as team manager for her daughter’s soccer team or building a kit airplane with her husband, who was a B-52 pilot in the Air Force. But she does it all with a selfless spirit.
“She worked hard so that she could help my dad save up enough money to afford to send all three of her kids to college,” says Emma. “Upon graduation, when I asked if I could pay her back or help pay for my younger sister’s college tuition, she smiled and told me ‘No, thank you, just pay it forward and start saving for my future grandchildren’s tuition.’”
Although you would think Monica doesn’t have much free time, she is always keeping busy whether she’s attending booster club meetings, playing racquetball or doing crossword puzzles.
“On the weekend is where I go really wild and sleep in until 9 or so,” she says with her signature sense of humor.
Monica’s busy life calls for clothes that are easy to care for and easy to wear, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t pair her casual style with an occasional fancy splurge—usually on a trendy pair of shoes.
Her style is inspired by her two daughters and by what the mannequins are wearing when she window shops her favorite stores.
Her go-to item is a pair of skinny jeans, which she owns in a variety of colors, because they’re so versatile and flatter her figure. She wears them with an oversized sweater and ankle boots in cooler weather, and with a sheer blouse and wedge sandals when it’s warmer.
Monica believes that personal style is important, but that it goes far beyond the clothes you wear. “When and if I make an impression, I would like to leave a good one…if not great!” she says. “Unfortunately, sometimes that begins and ends with appearances, but it should go deeper than that to a person’s character, personality and, last but not least, a good sense of humor.”
